The junior national trials was held yesterday (19.01.2019) at the Sugathadasa Stadium. The Athletic Association of Sri Lanka (AASL) made this selection trial in order to qualify to the Asian Youth Athletic Championship (AYAC) which will be held from 15th - 17th March 2019 in Hong Kong.
Shemal Milinda Perera of St. Mary's College Chilaw clocked 10.80 secs in his 100m qualifying time 10.88 and 22.22secs in his 200m even which he fell short of the qualifying time of 21.95 secs. However, Milinda's 100m timing will not go in to the national records as there was a wind gauge of +3.1.
Rumesh Tharanga of St. Peter's College made a stunning 51.90m at discus throw which was 0.90m above the qualifying mark for the AYAC. He also made a 63.48m throw in javelin which fell short of the qualifying 70m mark.
Sadeepa Henderson of Gateway International agonizingly fell short of the qualifying time of 12.25 secs as she finished her 100m 12.26 secs. In her 200m event she clocked 25.07 falling short of 0.07 secs to qualify. However, she will get a slot to compete in Hong Kong.
